Marty, I believe it is brown bitterweed (Helenium amarum)http://www.wildflower.org/plants/result.php?id_plant=HEAMB2 but some could be greenthread.
Brown bitterweed along with greenthread (Thelesperma filifolium) spread across large areas in the Hill Country during May. And they look similar to each other from a distance.
I do my best not to feature a non-native wildflower in my Texas Wildflower Report photos. Sometimes it is not easy given how much the invasive bastard cabbage has spread

What are the yellow flowers in foreground?
Are they native or invasive?
I saw these a few days ago all around the area of Enchanted Rock and the Willow City Loop.
