BNSF Railway's brand new ES44DC prime-mover #7662 leading eastward train by milepost 545. It was followed by ES44DC #7654 and an older (ex-Santa Fe) Dash 8-40CW. A model in General Electric's "Evolution Series", the ES44DC replaces the ubiquitous - at least on the BNSF - Dash 9-44CW. It features a 4400-horsepower (3281 kilowatts) 12-cylinder power plant and enlarged radiator surface. Its reduced fuel consumption and emissions should result in lower operating costs for railroads.
