Gray Flycatcher devouring a ladybug
(9 photos)
(Empidonax wrightii)

Baylands Park, Sunnyvale, Ca

In the photo above, the Gray Flycatcher has captured a nearby ladybug

The bird has the ladybug firmly in its beak and is beginning the killing and crushing process prior to swallowing it.

The ladybug has been partially crushed by the flycatcher's beak.

The bird shook the ladybug violently to make sure it was dead or to dismember it further before swallowing it.

After the violent shaking and crushing of the ladybug, the bird is preparing to swallow it.

The ladybug has been swallowed.

Several minutes later, I thought the bird was opening its beak to sing or call. I was wrong.

The return of the ladybug. Turns out ladybugs don't go down, or stay down, easily.

The bird very quickly swallowed the ladybug...again...and, hopefully, for the last time.
