Birds of South Africa - Western Cape

Family birding trip to South Africa from 03-August to 28-August -2009.After one week in Kruger Natioal Park with a stopover at Blyde Canyon we headed to Cape Peninsula for a boat trip to the Pelagic Birds and visited Cape Town surroundings, than Rooiels,Harold Porter Botanical Garden, De Hoop Nature Reserve,Wilderness Nature Park,Swartberg Pass,Tankwa Karoo National Park and at last to West Coast National Park.We hired our first car in Johannesburg,than after a flight from Kruger Park to Cape Town we hired another car.

My shots were done with my new Canon 50D,with Canon 300mm f2,8L IS USM & Canon 1,4xII tc & Kenko 2x Pro300 or without Extender.For little birds I urgently needed a 500mm lens but I cann't carry this heavy lens.Most pics were taken through the window of the car(Kruger Park)or with tripod and some handheld.

Very helpful- thank you. Found my Southern Double Collared Sunbird here (I saw it at the Botanical gardens on holiday). Still a couple of birds I saw but cannot identify...

Was trying to ID a bird I saw on the rocks at Fish Hoek this evening. Found the picture but no name. Your site had the picture and the name - African Black Oystercatcher. Thank you. Excellent presentation here.

A superb gallery with many wonderful images Reini!!! A heavy 500mm lens is more of a tool for dim-witted brutes like me! :-) Compromise -> try the 400mm F4 DO lens. I have a friend who uses it -the perfect travel lens! Best wishes, Steve
