I went out this afternoon to check on the bluebirds to see if they had fledged. I found the parent bluebirds 200 m before I got to the nest box which wasn't unusual, but as I was getting closer to the bluebirds, they started making alarm calls and they then started aggressively diving at me when I started walking among a certain group of trees, something they had only previously done whenever I got within a couple feet of the nest box, which suggested that the fledglings were in that immediate area (I later checked the nest box and it was empty). A number of other birds came around to see what the bluebirds were fussing over including one of the cuckoos that I have heard and seen a number of times on that property lately. The curious cuckoo landed in a bush in front of me to look me all over which gave me an amazing photo opportunity I never thought I would ever experience with these very secretive birds. The cuckoo and I stared each other down for almost a minute before it disappeared back into the thicket where it seems to have a nest.
