A family of Great Horned Owls have nested at a local conservation area this spring. I have been around a few times over the weeks to see the progression of the nest but not bothered to take any photos except a few souvenir shots here and there because the nest was just too high and far for my smaller lens. Today I passed by the nest again, stopped for a few minutes to see what was going on before continuing on elsewhere like I had done in the past, and just after I got there the young owlets took their first steps out of the nest. The owlets came out of the "back" of the nest where previously they had not been visible. The angle of light and distance there worked out even for my smaller lens so I went around to see if I could get some shots. The owlets were only out of the nest for a few minutes to make way for mother owl to fly in with a meal (a dead gull) and tear it apart for them. This was my favorite shot from the few minutes they were out of the nest.
