Stromatolites

The circular patterns in the rock are fossilized mats of cyanobacteria. It is theorized that these stromatolites, as these mats or colonies of cyanobacteria are called, were responsible for oxygenating our atmosphere 2.1 billion years ago. Without stromatolites life as we know it including mankind would not exist. This huge patch of fossilized stromatolites is among the largest site of its kind in Canada yet the site is strangely unacknowledged and unmarked in the field.

An astounding image and a great explanation..
I had imagined, at first, that it was those circles of plate-like ice which can occasionally form.
They are interesting, but this formation is so aged and mysterious.
Thank you.
