The Melk Abbey is a magnificent, 900 year old Baroque structure which rises up from the surrounding countryside along the Danube River. Strategically located on a steep, cliffside perch, the Melk Abbey's earliest incarnation was a Roman post. Later, it served as a tenth century Babenburg fortress. It became a Benedictine monastery in 1089 and earned a distinguished reputation for medieval scholarship.
