We just released a male this morning. So pretty! It was a nice science lesson for our sons! My Mom found the catapillar on her parsley plant and she was almost as excited as the kids to see its outcome

A Black SwallowTail Butterfly landed on my Ficus tree this morning. I have never seen a butterfly so large. It is about 4 - 5 inches wide and so beautiful. It seemed to attach itself to the leave and didn't budge when I creeped up close to take a picture. You can see this beautiful picture on my facebook page.

Oh my, I have thirteen on my parsley. They have been eating for a week now. We're watching and hoping red birds don't find them. Have them nesting nearby along with 3 nests of house finches...

After the swallow tail becomes a butterfly, what type of plant would it lay its eggs on and how long does it take from catterpillar to full butterfly? I live in the Chicago area
and was concerned about cold weather setting in.
Thank you.
