Backstage at a Beauty Pageant

I had the opportunity to shoot the Miss Georgia Mountain Fair Beauty Pageant. I chose to shoot backstage because everyone has seen these events from the spectator side. I was not disappointed as this event is much, much more than what you see on stage.

On the day of the Pageant, my group THE DAZZLIN" DAMES, performend before the pageant and stayed to watch the pageant. It was great and I liked seeing your photographs....very good work. I just wish you could have photograped our group as well. We are all ladies over age 60 and have all participated in the Ms. Sr. GA Pageant in Atlanta. We sing, tap dance, clog and present an entertaining, professional show. We will be performing again this year 2007.......at noon, July 23. Hope you will at least come see our show and you may even want to take pictures of us. !! You may be surprised.

All of the girls that praticpated in the pageant were wonderful. Great Photos taken Richard.I thought every girl should have one. They were all gegouras.

Hi Richard. Thank you for the compliment on my Jacksonville Skyline! It is beautiful at night as you know since you grew up here! I think your photos in this gallery are fantastic. They really give such a different view point. All of the shots that were taken from the back of the stage while they are posing and waiting are such a unique view point. Wonderful! - Beth

Congrats' on another gallery with legs. This was a pretty quick sprint to numero uno. Your ability to control exposure and get into these ladies heads is becoming more astounding with each gallery. And, in my opinion, monochrome is a fine choice for bringing their personalities forward. g

I commented when it was in the forum but really find this to be a wonderful gallery. I've been around some local fairs and the "Miss Whatever" pageant portion was really pretty tacky and for the younger girls, approaching sordid. This has none of that feel to it and really pulls you into the event.

Very curious on the "how" Did you shoot in black & white or is that post-processing? When I used a film camera, I used B&W film a lot but now in digital I always seem to shoot in color. I say I can de-colorize it later but I never do. Great shots.

The vote had already been cast but you deserve it again. I love the new layout, the perfect contrast control, the superb reportage feeling that has been portrayed and the fact that the entire gallery has been presented in monochrome. This is legendary stuff. Yeah, You will allways be recognized (and revered) for your fantastic ballet captures but this one comes very close to the b/w rehearsal shots. It is the back stage glimpse that us normal mortals rarely get to see and you have provided us with a beautiful back-stage-pass. Thanks!

Hey Richard, you should really split this gallery into B/W and colour. Even if the last 4 colour ones would go on a second page the appearance would be better. This is a fantastic series and as a sucker for monochrome, you have struck a sensitive chord with me. This one is bound to win votes. The subjects are great, the back stage view is something that has become synonymous with Mr Calmes and the quality of the shots with difficult lighting is mindboggling. You just make it appear so easy! V
