Nutcracker 2005

These photos were made during performances of The Nutcracker at the Gwinnett Performing Arts Center. These dancers take their performances seriously and when not actually "on stage" are in the wings watching, waiting their turn, and supporting their fellow dancers in many ways. I tried to capture some of that spirit with these photographs. I used a Canon 70-200 f2.8L with image stabilization. There is definitely no place for a tripod or monopod as dancers, props, and crew are in constant motion, and I had to constantly jump this way or that to stay out of the way, so image stabilization was critical. This is a wonderful collection of the classic ballet. This has brought back memories for me..ones I will re-live with my daughter! A pretty, charming gallery. A little girls dream!

It is a pity that the guest did not leave a name but I second the idea to have a book published. Please add me to the list of people who would like to purchase a copy. This is a great series but in all honesty, I believe that the monochrome series does more for me. The colours here are beautiful but the classic monochrome choice is one that goes hand in hand with the classic art of dance. These images too would suit well for the monochromatic format. Hehehe, from a publishing point of view it would also be cheaper to get it printed in B/W. That said, these are really legendary images that will bring you to fame. Look at me, I live on a small rock across the atlantic and your name has already become a household name at our club. I use the same lens and must admit that it is a fantastic one. Equipment may be essential but without the eye of the artist, most of these shots would have remained "behind the scenes". Thank you very much for sharing these moments with us.

I've done a little backstage and performace work and know how difficult it is. This is an example of excellence in this type of work and deserves to be held as a standard. Outstanding. Excellent work in very testing lighting conditions - great atmosphere. Thank you so much for giving a glimpse of a world most of us never see, it’s very insightful. I’ve only seen one ballet, Swan Lake and have been keen to see The Nutcraker as so many people suggest it should be the first ballet you see. I’m now even more keen on seeing it.

It is a delightful side-step from the mainstream dance, and a side of it that I have not seen in this incredible display of images. I love the emotion, and feelings each image instills. I remember something a photographer once said to me. When you see a flower, you photograph the flower, the true photographer is spending his time wondering what is around the flower. This is a great set of "around the flower" images.. Voted most definitely.

Richard, You list the 70-200 f2.8 IS lens and you make great use of the lens for handheld photography where tripods would not work. I also see 35mm f2.8 for some of your photographs, what lens are you using there? Do you use any other methods for these great pictures? Monopod, brace against a wall or pole, beanpod, etc? Or all handheld? If so very steady. Great pictures. Cheers, Bill

Great stuff Richard. I love this type of thing. I spent years working in the Theater (did my share of Nutcrackers at Christmas) but never had a chance to combine the two passions and shoot backstage. You have done an excellent job with this one!

I have not looked at all your galleries, but this is amazing. You must have a very steady hand or a support to get the sharpness that you do at 1/30 th of a second. Great lighting/exposure and composition. Neil
