The spiritual and historical heart of this massive city is the famous Plaza de Mayo.
This is the main square which was laid out in 1580.
It is flanked by important buildings including:
The Casa Rosada - the pink presidential palace, from whose balcony Evita, Peron, Galtieri and even Maradona have addressed huge crowds;
The Metropolitan Cathedral - the impressive neo-classical Catholic cathedral; and others.
Plaza de Mayo is the focal point of political protests:
The Mothers of Plaza de Mayo have marched in protest every Thursday afternoon for three decades;
other regular protestors include human rights groups, trade unions, unemployed, homeless, etc.
