Marysville is located within the heavily forested mountains of the Great Dividing Range, Due to its scenic and peaceful location, Marysville has long been a popular holiday retreat for visitors and became a favourite for honeymooners due to its tranquil setting amongst native bush and waterfalls.
On 7 February 2009, a series of individual bushfires now known as the Black Saturday Bushfires burned across Victoria.. Marysville and its surrounding areas suffered the greatest losses, as two of the largest fires merged and swept through the community. The fire claimed 40 lives, destroyed or damaged 538 homes across the district, wiped out the quaint Marysville business centre, pub, resort, police station, health clinic, kindergarten and primary school.
It's taking time, but Marysville is slowly becoming a thriving town again and the rebirth of the forests is brilliantly visible. The charred forest landscapes that had been burned in our memory were barely recognisable. Lustrous mosses now carpet the forest floor, ferns had grown two metres in two years. The earth is peaty and mulchy, oozing life. Towering eucalypts sprout iridescent green shoots while 20-meter lengths of bark lay at their feet after serving their seasonal, protective duties.
Great gallery guys and a harrowing story but ending in hope, exactly as it should be. Hope for the rehabilitation of both the town and its people and the beautiful forest. Best regards Dave.
