The Kookaburra is best known for their unmistakable call which sounds uncannily like loud echoing human laughter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOY4X56qiuY
Hear the sound http://soundbible.com/1786-Laughing-Kookaburra-Birds.html
Their call starts with a low hiccuping chuckle sound then they throw their heads back in raucous laughter. It is an amazing sound early in the morning when groups of them get together.
They can sometimes be seen in outer suburban gardens and are so accustomed to humans they will feed out of their hands.
They are a large bird approximately 40-45cm (16-18in)
