Southern Ground-hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri) male

Masai Mara, Kenya

Ground-hornbills pair for life but have a cooperative breeding strategy with helpers assisting in the feeding of dependent young. Unfortunately they have an amazingly low productivity; observations in South Africa show that on average only one chick is reared to fledging every 9 years (Kemp, 1995)!
It takes a chick at least 6 years to reach maturity and though long-lived these bird are clearly very susceptible to any form of disturbance!

With that kind of survival rate it is extraordinary that they still are around.
Head of a Hornbill, body of a Turkey and legs of a Cassowary! Strange critter!

Great capture of this incredible bird! And like you wrote one day by one of my photo's:
"I love the way they swagger when they walk........a bird full of attitude!"

That's a bird with personality! It's interesting to read about their lives too.
