Jacksons Hornbill (Tockus jacksoni) male

Baringo Cliffs, Lake Baringo, Kenya

The object of his affection is just to the right out of shot.
Hornbill breeding biology is very interesting. Pairs form tight monogamous bonds which the male cements with succulent little gifts to his lady (if locusts and hoppers turn you on!). The pair choose a hole or fissure in a tree in which the female becomes ensconced -she plasters up the nest-site effectively incarcerating herself leaving only a small hole through which the female and subsequent young are fed. At this stage the female and young are heavily dependent on the foraging abilities of the male which is why pre-nuptial ceremonial gift offering plays such a large part in Hornbill courtship.
