Spot-bellied Eagle Owl (Bubo nipalensis)

Near The Blue Magpie Hotel, Sinharaja

This huge & impressive owl is scarce throughout its range which makes the fact that I screwed -up taking this and the following image all the more painful!

This was our first day in Sri Lanka and we were on our way to our first accommodation when our guide presented us with this rare opportunity. Unfortunately we had the air-con in our vehicle turned up full with the result that as soon as I stepped out of the vehicle into the hot humid forest air my lens/camera fogged-up. Sadly we didn't have sufficient time (or a hair-dryer!) to de-mist the glass and so the images taken were very poor, hazy and under-exposed requiring considerable work in Photoshop to rescue them.

So remember, if travelling in hot humid conditions don't switch on the aircon!!!

Yep, know what you mean. In Ghana we piled out the van for a Black-bellied Bustard and everything fogged up - including my spectacles so I didn't even see the bird !

Not bad under the conditions. The same thing happens when coming in from the cold to a heated room.
