This rather poor model shows the once extensive buildings on James Island in the river Gambia. The island was once quite large and was the main "storage facillity" for new slaves prior to their transatlantic voyage to a (usually short) life of misery (assuming they survived the journey) in the new colonies of the Americas.
Today James Island is rapidly eroding and may soon disappear.
