The "grass" in the foreground is rice.
Despite being a "cultivated" area these ricefields are very wildlife-rich holding large numbers of invertebrates & small fish with standing water which persists through the dry season. As a result good birds are attracted to Kotu ricefields at times when other wetlands have dried up: http://www.pbase.com/image/105000177
