In October this area holds relatively few birds as at this time of year (end of rainy season) there are pools of water & temporary wetlands everywhere. In addition many waterbirds are still at their breeding colonies inland whilst most palearctic waders have yet to arrive. In compensation breeding plumage Red Bishop males are everywhere whilst intra-African migrants such as Woodland Kingfisher & Levaillant's Cuckoo are plentiful.
By early November many of the temporary wetlands inland have dried up, it is at this time that the Kotu ricefields come into their own attracting good numbers of waterbirds.
