The largest fire in Arizona history started in the summer of 2002 when two fires converged during record drought conditions in the state. One fire was started by a man who wanted to find work as a fire fighter. The second fire was started by a woman who was lost and started a signal fire. More than 450,000 acres burned and over 200 homes were destoyed. Conservatives blamed environmentalists for the destructive force of the fire.
