The island of Chiloe is really a special place. It has none of the almost gaudy beauty that can be found nearby in the Chilean Lake Districts, or Patagonia. No snow capped volcanos, no emerald colored lakes, no vast glaciers or vast technicolor vistas. The beauty there is much more subtle and hard to describe, it's all on a human scale. Culturally it is also one of the most interesting and unique places in my native Chile, a country which tends to be very homogenous.
