On the second day we hiked from Refuge Les Grandes to Refuge La Flegre via Aiguillette des Posettes and Tre-La-Champ. An hour and a half into our day we came to Col de Balme at the border of Switzerland and France and home to a refuge of the same name with an infamously grouchy guardian. Here we caught our first glimpse of Mont Blanc. The rest of this long day (13 miles, 5635 feet elevation change) we were treated to fantastic views of the northern face of Mont Blanc and the adjacent peaks and glaciers.
