The ground squirrels I had previously seen in Yellowstone looked more like prairie dogs and I initially thought these ground squirrels were chipmunks. It's a common mistake to make because they both have distinctive stripes on their bodies. The way to distinguish between the two is to look at their face: chipmunks also have stripes on their face and the ground squirrels don't.
