Jasper National Park is home to over a thousand elk and they are easily spotted along the roadsides and around the townsite. On a previous trip to Jasper we encountered multiple elk in the Whistler's Campground (including a bull elk that was not to happy to see our car) and this trip was similar. Every day we saw elk in the campground (mostly females and their offspring, but also some large bull elk). This female was grazing in our campsite one evening.
The fall rut starts in late August and the bull elk become really aggressive. There are signs everywhere warning about the elk (including pictures of smashed cars and people being chased). Not sure about the effectiveness of the signs - we still saw tourists getting way too close. We stopped several times to watch large bull elk keep their harem in line or lock antlers/chase off younger bull elk.
