My favorite history teacher in high school always used to ask where popular fiction (or at least its covers) would have been without the Nazis (he also used to say that there were two kinds of history students: the quick and the dead). Well, popular fiction might have survived without the Nazis, but it would definitely not have survived without lurid red covers.
