My father served on H.M.C.S. Uganda and other ships. This ship was his favourite and this gallery is my Remembrance Day project. My dad, PO G.R.Paege, now 93 (May, 2020), was on the Uganda 1944-45 under CAPT Mainguy. He's listed on the memorial in Winnipeg. I still have a few pieces of his old gear. Thanks for doing this!

My Grandfather, Fernand Daigle (O.A. 4c) served on the Uganda in WW2. He too did not talk much about his experience until very late in his life. He told be stories of crossing the equator, meeting up with the US 3rd fleet (ships as far as the eye could see), a kamikaze strike he witnessed on a US aircraft carrier they were cruising alongside and much more. One story that I particularly remember was during a mission (I think at Okinawa) where they had to bombard the enemy on shore. Their mechanical targeting table that directed their guns broke down and he had to fix it. It took hours in the sweltering heat (he was stripped down to his underwear) working underneath the table and the Captain was asking him for updates every 15 minutes. He managed to get the table working right as they were coming into position for their bombardment mission. He also told me the story of how the Uganda "voted themselves out of the war" but that it didn't really work and that they would have been Canada's representation at the Japanese surrender in Tokyo harbour if it hadn't been for a ruptured boiler liner that needed urgent repair at Pearl Harbour. I have a bunch of his pictures an medals as well as the book, "The Cruiser Uganda - One war - Many conflicts" by Stephen Conrad Geneja that is a complete history of the history of the HMCS Uganda/ Quebec. My father, Harry Lorne Sykes served on the HMCS Uganda from the 22 August 1945 - 31 July 1947. From the 15 December 1945 he served as Petty Officer. My Dad was born in Edmonton, Alberta on the 15 May 1924 and passed away at Gibson's Landing in British Columbia on the 1st of January 1968. Any info about his life would also be appreciated. Hello All, I served on the Quebec in 1954/55 under captain Finch-Noyes. We sailed the South American and the African cruise . During the African cruise, I was part of the team that operated 2 crew members for appendectomy with Surgeon Commodore Dr MacIver who recently passes away (Wallacburg) I am looking for photos of those operations. I have since lived in France for many years studying , Ireland, West Indies and of course Canada (most provinces. I am now living in Québec (Longueuil) ...and retired

My father served onboard the HMCS Uganda. I know very little about his naval service. I am interested in finding out what rank he held,his role and where the ship sailed. my father was an army seargent in the signal unit and later artillery unit with the king Aafrican rifles. they were from Uganda by then british east African protectorate. they wre taken to Kenya during ww2. nyanyuki, gilgil, went to etthiopia, Madagascar, and india. his army number was 1877, which i remember written on his food ratio metal ' misting' metal container,can the british fco send me his photos from the archives? his name was YUVAN ABITA

Served on Quebec from late 52 through 53 was on operation mainbrace , coronation , and new oleans trip .served as a sig mostly on the open bridge, Capt Budge was the commander ,took many photos at sea ,spithead,norway etc etc. Capt buge was the finest tactician especially during mainbrace.

I was a stoker aboard H.M.C.S. Quebec. I was drafted aboard when she was in Esquimalt. First to Magdalina Bay for painting after sea trials. Through the Panama Canal then to Halifax. Served in her for approx. 2 1/2 years. Crossed the arctic circle and became a 'bluenoser'. A good time aboard.

He died several years ago from bone cancer, rest his sole, but he always had a glitter in his eyes when he spoke of the good old days in the navy. I served on the H.M.C.S.Quebec from nov.2nd/53 to june 9/54. as an os. I made the trip to Baltimore, Cuba, Brest {France}, Lisbone {Portugal}, Copenhagen {Denmark}, and Madeira Island before returning to Halifax. That was a great experience having to sleep in a hammock for all that time. After all that time I found 3 of my old bodies living in the same block apartment where i now live. they were on the Quebec too when we made those trips to Europe. What a shock when they told me they had served at the same time as me. I have the picture of the Quebec taken off the coast of the island of Madeira in 1954.

Thank you so much for your time and effort on this site. As expressed by others, my father, Lowell F. Stewart remains reluctant to speak of his time aboard the Uganda. I'm not sure when specifically he served (as a torpedoeman), but he was on board for 2 years just as the war was ending, and rounded the Cape and transited the Panama Canal. If anyone has any information or pictures specific to him and his time on board it would be appreciated.

My Dad was a Torpedo man on HMCS Uganda during WW II. His name was Del Cameron. He passed away in 1985 but I have his medals, service records & only a couple pictures. He loved going to the re-unions & meeting his old shipmates. There was one in particular that he spoke about. His nickname was "Spud". Does anyone know of him or his family? My Father Kenneth Stanley Sherman served on the Uganda during world war II.He joined the Canadian Navy in 1943 at the age of 17 and had to get his mothers permission to join up.He was part of the gun crew on one of the large guns he loaded the cordite in one of the large guns.He passed away in 1992.I am proud of my fathers services to our country and wish I knew more about his time on the Uganda.Any info or pictures would be greatly treasured.You can email me at jimsherman14@shaw.ca

We visited Boston where I encountered pizza for the first time, New York City where I learned that New Yorkers were considerate and well-disposed to foreign sailors, and to Greenock in Scotland which I thoroughly enjoyed. I served in HMCS Quebec may-Nov 1952 as a Ordinary Seaman under training. Captain P.D. Budge was in command. My training officer was Commissioned Officer Peakman,& training Petty Officer was G. My Grandfather ROY LOCKHART served on a ship called the HMCS UGANDA - Were there more ships with the same name - I don't know what he did on board - I know he had a picture of it in his living room with a medal hanging on it - he talked about it getting torpedoed - I have tried to find pictures or crew lists with his name but to no avail - does anyone know him or have a crew list ?

HMCS Quebec was my "first ship" in March of 1954 after basic training at Cornwallis. This was followed by HMCS Nootka and then HMCS Magnificent. I enjoyed them all, and often visit the HMCS Haida (Nootka's sister ship) in Hamilton.

The bearded sailor in picture A136099-v6.jpg is my father Leslie Walker,C.D. He was the proudest sailor I've ever met. He passed away 8 Nov. 2009 at the age of 91 yrs. with a picture of the HMCS Uganda on the wall over his head. He has been buried with his Uganda crest with him. His #'d print picture is being donated in his name to the Naval Museum at HMCS Chippawa where he remained a reservist from 1951 until 1975 when he retired as a Chief Warrant Officer.

I am sitting beside Oliver Henderson (My Uncle) who was an Able Seaman (AB) Service No. V59710 on HMCS Uganda. Particulars: Mess 38, Cruising Station Starboard Pom Pom. Action Station After Pom Pom Director. He worked as a Quarter Deckman. He was part of the ships company when she was ommissioned (in Charlston,South Carolina, Oct 21, 1944) as the HMCS Uganda - formerly the HMS Uganda. He went to the Pacific and fought in the battle of Formosa, returning with the Ship to Naval Base HMCS Esquimalt, Canada on Aug 10, 1945.

My father William James Cochrane "Smitty" served as a stoker on board the HMCS Uganada from 1944-45 (possibly 43-44) I'm not certain of the dates - I guess I paid more attention to his stories than the dates. He had a tatoo of an Albatros with "Panama" on his left arm...not sure if any of the other men on board did the same. He said it marked the crossing through the Panama Canal and the bird was for the Uganada. He passed away this summer and I had the incredible opportunity to speak with one of his shipmates Wayne Hobbs. I have a photo of them together along with another life long friend of his Ronald Irving and I believe it was taken in front of the ship. Good evening, A most interesting website. I completed my final research project on HMCS and her operational experiences in the Pacific Theatre along with the reasons behind the crew's decision not to revolunteer for further service in the Pacific Theatre. In doing so, I was very fortunate to attend the 2002 HMCS UGANDA / QUEBEC Association Reunion in Kingston, Ontario and meet several members of the ship's company. My father, Murdo MacLeod, Served on the HMCS Uganda. Unfortunatly he was killed in a car crash in 1958. He was a Leading Seaman and served as a radio operator until the end of the war. I was very young when he passed away and never got to hear his stories of his wartime experience. Your website has been very helpful as has the book "HMCS Uganda-One War, Many Battles". His name has been mispelled "McLeod" in the any of the crew lists I have seen.

My father, Edward J.Robertson Bird was onboard the Uganda as a cook and a gunner. He passed away in 2001. He gave me his photo album and his medals. I would like to hear from anyone who knew him. My father, Carl James Highsted served on the HMCS Uganda. He never talked about his time serving Canada. I now believe after reading all the info about the ship and it's history, it is something that was difficult to talk about. My father passed away this spring. I am a proud son and will remember always that these men and women gave so much for us.

My grandfather served on the HMCS Uganda in WWII.James O'Neill,,I loved to listen to his storys when he was on the ship.He was in every ocean she was in, he past away dec\06,he will be missed. WE SHOULD NEVER FORGET WHAT THOSE MEN DID FOR US

on one of my yard sale haunts i found a document of charles quinn's. he was on the h.m.c.s. uganda under captain e.r. mainguy. this document is dated february 25 1945. if you know of anyone that might be interested in this document please email me at sbiccum@b2b2c.ca hoping to hear from someone soon.

Hey nice pictures!!My dad was a pom-pom operator on the HMCS Uganda he was Boudreau L.R. O/S.I have a picture of him that I am having made into a tattoe ..I wish I could find the ships badge for a tattoe as well..

My father, Harold James Jessop served on the HMCS Uganda. All his personal files, medals and war history has been lost over the past years. He was born April 1, 1920 and died December 1, 1971 in Oldcastle, Ontario. Any info about his life during the second world II and medals he received, would be greatly appreciated.
