This was the principal street of the city in Roman and medieval times, providing access to the
Minster and to the Roman Basilica that was there before it. It subsequently became a centre
for various trades associated with the Minster, such as glass-painters, printers and goldsmiths.
The original Roman Via Praetoria is said to be buried about six feet below the current street.
The street allegedly contains the oldest pub, and the most haunted house in the city!
