Dutch cemetery, Cochin, India, 2008

The cemetery was locked, but fortunately the image I wanted to make was right in front of me, an easy shot through the bars of the entrance gate. The key symbol is the hand on the back of the tomb. It seems to beckon to us, as if, after all these years, it was waving us on to eternity. The Dutch, who ruled Cochin in the 17th century, left the bones of its shopkeepers and traders in massive tombs, as upright and stolid as the Dutch character. By converting this image to black and white, I make them blend into each other, a continuous row call of mortality.

Thanks, Tim, for coming to this image, one of my favorites. I agree -- there is much tension created here by the opposing curves. I wanted this image to be a study in layers, building on the symbolic hand in the foreground, and then thrusting back via the coffin shaped tomb in the middle layer, which, in turn, points towards the pairings of inverted arches in the background layer. I melt it all together by removing all of the coloration distinctions. As I said in my caption, I wanted this image to symbolize the never ending roll call of mortality itself.

I like the geometry of this image - the interaction of angles and arches - and the tension between the arches in the rear.
