Rural rush hour, Tan Chau, Vietnam, 2008

Tan Chau is a suburb of Chau Doc, a city not far from the Cambodian border. We were touring its dirt roads during our final evening in Vietnam and witnessed this rush hour exodus by motorbike. This tells the story of a community on the move, largely in one direction. The last light of the day warms the scene, and the dusty haze adds a healthy dose of atmosphere. The focal point of the picture is the masked lady in red, a phantom figure of authority. She wears a hat and rides a traditional bike. She follows a group of school children in uniform, also on bikes. Behind her are still more bikes, as well as a group of helmeted motorbike riders, most of them carrying passengers with legs flung out for balance. The line continues as far back as the eye can see, and carries us to the second most significant detail – a man riding a bike in the opposite direction. He moves against the flow, the lone dissenter. It is, in effect, the story of rural Vietnam – where life does not revolve around the automobile, and everyone rides a bicycle or motorbike to work or school. And most people seem content to follow the leader.

Thanks, Guest. The people of rural Vietnam were wonderful to us during our visit. I wish you and your wife all the best. Thanks for coming to this image.

Thanks, Chris -- when I travel, I usually seek out opportunities to photograph ways of life that differ from my own. In this case, we simply found ourselves on a dirt street at rush hour. It was late in the afternoon, and the angle of light was low and its color warm. The combination of dust and the warm, low light gives the image its mood and meaning, and helps tell the story I am trying to tell here. (This is not noon light -- if it was noon, the light would be high and harsh and not as warm, and the people here would all still be at work.)

I want to say that this photo is so dramatic, tells so good the story of these people. A different world if you compare with the west way of living. The light, this warm noon light adds so much to the drama of this image Phil. Maybe with a normal sunlight it wouldn't be so strong and complete the composition!

Thanks, Carol, for your comment. Tim and I spent much of the sunset photographing on this dirt road. The combination of dust and the golden setting sun is tailor made for atmospheric images. You are right about transportation in Vietnam -- there are few public buses or trains. And almost no cars. Almost all transportation is personally provided, and on two wheels, either motorized or not.

The dust from the dirt road really sets the scene here. Replace the scooters with horses and you've got a western movie set. The light is so warm as well, as if riding into a sunset. It is also interesting how scooters and bicycles allow people of any age at all to transport themselves independently.
