Legacy of Fire, Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado, 2007

Mesa Verde occupies 84 square miles in Southwestern Colorado. It is known for its cave dwellings, and for the forest fires that swept through it in 2002. This image expresses the legacy of those fires. By exposing on the sun trying to force it’s way through a blanket of cottony gray clouds, I able to silhouette the dead shrubs and trees that reach towards them. This silhouette speaks of death and destruction, while the brightness of the emerging sun symbolizes the resurrection of the land and all that might yet grow upon it. Since this is primarily a black and white image, I tested it first as a black and white conversion. The black and white version seemed to lose the spark of life, and the feeling of hope expressed by the greater reality of the creamy gray clouds and the trace of light blue around the sun that is granted to us by this color version.

Thanks, Iris -- the glow of the sun through a cloudy sky is always a symbol of hope -- and so, too, was the animated language of the branches, reaching out towards that glow. You see what I felt here.

While the silouettes may speak of death and destruction, they appear to be animated as their outstretched limbs reach out to the light offering us hope and the promise of renewal. Whatever adversities you put in her way, this image tells me that Mother Nature will survive!!

Yin/Yang, LIght/Dark, Life/Death. All opposites that involve contrast and provoke both feeling and thought. Thanks, Tim, for making this observation.

Obviously, this gallery is about light and dark - here, for me, you show that both and light and shadow are complex and inter act with each other. As you know I have been learning Tai Chi and am doing some minimal thinking about Yin Yang - this image is, for me, a symbol of that interplay of opposites.

Thanks, Patricia, for pointing out the spatial relationship between sky and trees here. I found a vantage point that enabled me to include more sky than trees, even though it took a bit of moving around. I also use an LCD viewfinder that is divided into a nine panel grid, reminding me to try both high horizons and low, and to shift my subjects to the left and right of center whenever possible. The more experience we get shooting in the field, the more intuitive horizon placement becomes. I very seldom place my horizons in the middle, which usually makes a predictable and static image.

I agree. The subtle color is essential to the life of this image. I also note with respect your composition that focuses on the trees, yes, but more on the sky. Perfectly composed to give the sense of hope you wanted.

I am glad you feel the same way I do about the color here, Rose Marie. You are right about the yin and yang of life and death. What we are seeing here is the way of the world.

Yes, the blue is what make this image work for me. It evokes comfort and hope - even when we are surrounded by death, blue skies and the warmth of the sun will return. Death and life, each an essential part of our world, never one without the other.

The wideangle gives it a sense of scale, while the silhouette provides the mood. Thanks, Alina.
