Moorish vision, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 2007

We found this reflection in a puddle just outside the city’s old train station. In this case, I kept the surrounding dirt in the image as context. The station becomes a metaphor for a vanished era.

The framing of the puddle is critical. It offers us a frame within a frame, and projects the viewer into the image, as well as creating incongruous context for the reflected image. Thanks, Azlin, for the comment.

Days gone by indeed. Thanks for also focusing our attention on the fact that a frame of a puddle, in addition to the puddle itself, can contribute so much to the story.

Fairy dust! What a wonderful thought for this image. It seemed magical to my eyes, too -- the Moorish building itself is something out of the Arabian Nights, and its reflected image, framed in earth, water, and sky, almost seems like a magic carpet.

You've made a magical looking glass here. All the spots and speckling in the water give the impression of fairy dust and lend a fantasy atmosphere to this reflection.

Thanks for the high praise, Dorothy. I shot this reflection again and again, along with my travel companions Tim, Cecilia, and her husband Chor. This was the most expressive because it blends three elements: earth, water, and sky -- into the old train station.

Yes -- both this reflection and your own are broken up by dry ground, fragmenting the scene. And that is what makes both of them work as abstraction.

It's the diagonal thrust that makes the composition work here, Alina. I just tilted the camera, pulled back a bit to allow the dirt and frame the image, and pressed the shutter.
