Street scene, Ait-Ali, Morocco, 2006

Ait-Ali is a small village near the end of the Dades Gorge. The people who walk this road are going about their daily lives. A man tosses a package from a parked truck. A child runs in front of it. Shoppers come and go. The buildings look as if they have been here for a long time. Its painterly coloration and relatively empty street express the timeless nature of life in a rural Moroccan town.

Bleakness is in the eye of the beholder, Rammaa. There is so much tradition in these rural villages in Morocco. What you may see as bleak, they see as unchanging, reliable, part of their culture. The houses are brown because they are often made of earth -- mud and clay. The material is called adobe. Brown is the natural color of this land on the edge of a great desert. It is the color of dust, of the earth itself. Brown is also the color of many of its people -- the skins of Moroccans reflect their dual heritage derived from both the desert and Africa. And brown is often the color of fabric as well -- it is also part of the Moroccan tradition. Is it any surprise then to see this streetscape as a study in browns? Thanks for pointing it out.
