Nike man, Meknes, Morocco, 2006

This man, who works on a farm outside of Meknes, probably has little, if any, understanding of the significance of the Nike athletic branding on his hat. It is an incongruous embellishment to western eyes, however – this fellow just does not look the part of an athlete, or even someone who follows international athletics. I am sure he likes the hat, however – it keeps him comfortable on cold winter mornings such as this one was.

Sometimes incongruity, Vera, is in the details. Such is the case here. I am sure with experience you, too, will develop an instinct for such detail as this as well.

This must be the link you referred to earlier. I stared at this picture trying to figure out what was incongruous about it. I was too busy looking at his face...which I love. What a great eye you have.

Thanks, Tim, for your kind words on this portrait. It is one of my favorites too. This man looked right into the camera without blinking, his delightful hat speaking volumes to us about the very things you say. You are right -- the things we throw away or give away can be found everywhere and anywhere on the globe.

Talk about product placement! Our western commercialism spreads to the far reaches of the world. I remember being struck by that when we were in Laos. I also am reminded of the way our surplus works its way to distant places. This is a wonderful portrait.
