Conversation, Jackson, Wyoming, 2006

I saw these locals conversing in the courtyard of a shopping complex in downtown Jackson and made this candid image through a doorway to capture the flavor of the place. I don’t know if they are cowboys in for a shopping spree, Snake River guides discussing business, or shop owners. But they certainly are relaxed, at ease with each other, and colorful additions to a tourist town that is famous for its Old West traditions and attractions. They project the human values we would expect from such folks: confidence, ease, and perhaps a touch of swagger.

I certainly will enthusiastically support the human values you see in this image, Merri. You know Old Jackson better than I would. But I can see how these fellows would seem more "legitimate" here than those of us what are merely passing through. People reflect human values all the time, but the places they inhabit will reflect them as well. The values that Jackson now reflect seem to be based on a sense of material wealth, while the values that signified the "Old Jackson" were obviously rooted in a very real understanding of the history, environment, and character of the place itself.

I have enjoyed visiting Jackson many times all the way back from when I was a little girl. It has changed significantly over the years, more money, more materialism, and more exclusivity nowadays... The changes have not been for the best. These men are none of that. I'm not sure how to describe the human value I see here, but probably 'legitimate' and 'real' are the closest I can come. They are "Old Jackson" for sure.
