Entrance, the Snow Lodge at Old Faithful, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, 2006

The colorful golden lanterns standout against a rich blue evening sky, bringing an oasis of warmth to the chilly open grid of timbers that form their ceiling. The figures of the bear and pine tree on the lanterns are the icons of Yellowstone itself. The low vantage point and the little Leica’s 28mm wideangle lens, allow me to get close to the lanterns for detail, yet still include much of the open log portico roof that supports them.

Thanks for being the first to comment on this image, Cyndy. It one of my favorites from Yellowstone. Blue and yellow are primary colors, so it was a natural subject for me. You are right -- as I walked beneath these lanterns on the way to dinner, I was the only person to stop and photograph what was directly overhead. Learning how to become an expressive photographer involves changing your basic visual habits. It is not only important to notice potential subject matter you might have missed before, but you also must be able to organize it effectively. In this case, the color drew my eye first. And then I put it all together, using the wideangle lens and the geometric overhead grid, to make the image express an essence of the Yellowstone experience. Notice the way the decorations on the lanterns even switch places from front to back. Small things like that can mean a lot.

I like the warmth of the lanterns juxtaposed against the cool blue evening sky, as well as the geometric patterns of the beams. I wonder how many people walk by and fail to see these little vignettes of artistic beauty? Thank you, Phil, for capturing it.
