Siding, Bodie State Historical Park, California, 2006

The weeds lap at the siding of this decaying structure in the Bodie ghost town. The early morning sun defines the texture and nature of the crude wooden planks that have been keeping the snow and rain out for the last 100 years. I only show part of the house – by combining a few boards with a single window that’s filled with wire mesh to keep intruders out, I’ve tried to express the essence of this place.

Actually, the wire mesh is there to keep people out of the building, helping to preserve it, as well as to protect the State of California from being sued by people who would crawl in there and injure themselves. As you say, in this image it separates the house from the world, giving it space to remain in the past. Thanks, Ai Li, for seeing this.

The wooden planks and the wire mesh created separation from the weather, from the light and from us, accentuating the sense of abandonment and perhaps aloofness that the house demanded. Not even the warm light and texture could bring us closer.
