Combine, Benton Hot Springs, California, 2006

A combine is a machine used to harvest, thresh, and clean grain plants. This is a ghost combine. It is stands near the road, overgrown with plants and weeds, a memory more than a machine. It seemed as if I was photographing a dinosaur, its long neck leaning crazily forward, as if it was lunging at me. The early morning light has given it a golden hue that guilds its deception. It stands adrift, an extinct creature awash in an ironic sea of vividly colored plants.

I knew you would enjoy this one, Ai Li. As a colorist, you would appreciate the incongruity of the dead machine amidst the glowing bushes. You are right -- they bring it to life here, even though it may as dead and extinct as a dinosaur.

It's really interesting to read your visualisation of the machine as an extinct dinosaur. It's no longer just another abandoned object. And the colors and the bush setting made it even natural, like a living creature on earth. Dead and decomposing. Amazing, Phil.
