Tide pool, Otter Crest Beach, DePoe Bay, Oregon, 2006

Starfish, and anemones, some open and some closed, make for a colorful gathering on the edge of a tide pool. Color plays an essential role in this image. Without it, we would not readily see the striking differences between species of tide pool life. As with flowers, it is color that gives these creatures much of their identity. Seen together, the greens, oranges, and purples in this image create a chromatic palette that resonates with lush theatricality.

Glad you pointed out the contrasts here, Ceci, between the living creatures and the rocks they inhabit.The curtain of the sea has parted, revealing those tenacious creatures you see clinging to those rocks. This, too, is one of my favorite images because it takes us where perhaps our eyes have never been before.

This is a marvelous shot, showing the tenacity of these "undersea" creatures which have to cling half in, half out of the water till the tide turns, seeming to indicate that they are a bit amphibious; we'd never have seen them but for the ocean receding, and your finding them. Lovely colors, sensuous shapes, and great contrast between the "living" and the "dead" of the rock -- or is it a bit of coral?

Thanks for mentioning perspective, Diana. I try to find vantage points that will immerse both myself and my viewers in the subject, and the variety of color alone makes this particular subject worth close study.

Yes, I felt the same thing as you when making this image, Jenene. Out of the primordial ooze, spectacularly different species of sea life come to coexist as a community of individuals. Thank you for sensing in this image what I felt as I made it.

You've created a metaphor for our fully colored world of different cultures. From the primordial ooze, emerges every imagineable species and brightly hued shape, to occupy space side by side while still retaining a measure of individuality.

The colours definitely make this picture more interesting. There are so many details in this photograph that colours are almost necessary to figure out what is what. Christine
