Lighthouse, Cape Mears, Oregon, 2006

The Cape Mears Lighthouse has been in operation since 1890 and has the shortest light tower (38 feet) on the Oregon Coast. I was able to stand on a hill overlooking the tower and photograph the lens of its light straight on. I chose to abstract the scene for the colorful pattern and reflections created by the lens, removing the context of the appearance of both the truncated lighthouse itself and its natural setting. The art of abstraction often involves removing context, thereby making an ordinary subject into an extraordinary image.

This is an abstraction, Mo. The patterns and colors speak their own language. There is no need to know what it is -- simply feel the energy and savor the beauty and appreciate the timeless geometric design. The image is like jewelry --it as no function other than to be appreciated for its own sake. I removed the context by taking away the structure itself and leaving only the essence of a lighthouse -- its light.

the colors really make this photo Phil - vivid reds and greens and without the title I would not have a clue what this is.
