Colors and Textures of the Palm, Villa Montezuma, San Diego, California, 2004

Texture can bring color to life as much as light. In this image, made in full in shade, the colors intensified not by light but by the play of texture upon them.
The contrasting green and tan coloring of these interwoven live and dead palm fronds are made more vital by the flow of rhythmic texture within them, as are the muted orange shingles on the exterior wall of the Villa Montezuma itself. The palm fronds reflected in the three windows have no color in them all, helping the lace curtains and the stained glass add context for meaning. Images such as this show us that color can work just as well under overcast skies or in the shade as it can in full sunlight.

Again, color, texture, and lines interplay beautifully.

Thanks, Anna. You will find yourself becoming continually more observant as you build your photographic experience. You will become much more conscious of small things now possibly overlooked such as reflections, shadows, the negative space between things, as well as what is going on at the edges of your frame.

Phil....I love how nature cooperated with you....green & gold of both the palm & house. The palms have a beautiful feathery quality!!

Phil, the first thought that crossed my mind when I saw this picture is how observant you are. I could walk by this window 10 time without seeing the potential. I like the contrasting textures best, mostly the glass window which stands out against the more natural ones in the palm.

Thanks, Wendy -- after studying your own color-drenched galleries here on pbase, I find I've become much more conscious of color and how it functions as meaning. The contrast here between the brown and the green is actually an interplay of vitality and decay. It's all about life, isn't it?
