Dubai Metro Station, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 2016

Until recently, the 47 mile long Dubai Metro was the world’s longest fully automated driverless metro transit network. (The driverless Vancouver Sky Train surpassed its length in 2016.) I made this image inside of the Emirates Towers Station, which was just next door to our Dubai hotel. I stood at the top of the escalator and waited for a person to enter the door of the station below. That small, silhouetted figure becomes the focal point of the image as it stands out against the highlighted entry, whle the swooping rails of the escalator lead the eye right to it. The interplay of light and shadow, as well as the sweep of my 24mm wideangle lens, create a futuristic scene.

Thanks for noticing the importance of that figure to this photograph, Iris. In this case, I first looked at the entire frame for the brightest section of the picture. I mostly use my spot-metering mode, and I knew if I exposed for the highlights, the rest of the image would darken accordingly, creating almost a theatrical mood. I then waited until that small silhouetted person stepped into that large highlighted area to release my shutter. The small figure, suspended within that elegant doorway, brings a great scale incongruity to this scene.

The lighting, the perspective, the vivid colors work so effectively in this image. The small figure entering the station provides a sense of scale and was certainly well worth waiting for.
