No drinking, no eating, Carrizozo, New Mexico, 2014

This restaurant has shut down. It’s doors are locked, their windows boarded up. Water left its mark on its façade, while a long crack runs through words that once proudly offered air conditioning. There has not been a drink or meal served here in quite a while, in spite of the signs over the twin doors. Yet the territorial architecture of this place speaks of the nature of New Mexico itself. Its portico creates a frame within a frame for my image, and the warmth of the evening light softens the harsh realities that stand before us.

Thanks, Barry, for the background info. You are right -- a photo gallery needs traffic to pay its way, and Carrizozo does not seem to fill that need. I do appreciate your restoration efforts however. As I mentioned, this old building speaks of the nature of New Mexico itself, and your restoration work has at least helped the place to keep standing.

I did some restoration work on this building back in 2008 or so. The owner intended it to be a gallery of his photos. Maybe it is now but who's gonna travel over an hour to look at photos when you can post them on the internet?

I find it fascinating that we both photographed this building, two years apart, by using entirely different approaches. Your black and white study confirms the sad reality of economic failure, while my warm color image softens that reality, yet in the process creates an incongruous juxtaposition of beauty and ugliness.

I also photographed this old restaurant/bar when I was in New Mexico a couple of years ago.
http://www.pbase.com/irislm/image/147836228. You had the warm glow of evening light that softened "the harsh reality" of this place. I was there in the middle of the day and chose to emphasize the harsh reality by turning it into a monochromatic image.
