Colors of time, Baranof Island, Alaska, 2013

Ancient mineral deposits blend with moss and lichen, turning a huge rock into a facsimile of an artist’s palette. As we study these colors and their random design, we seem to be looking back into time itself. I used a 28mm wideangle focal length to come in very close, yet still manage to include a considerable sampling of rock.

Thanks, Iris, for pointing out the importance of nature's art here. Alaska is a showcase for nature's art. So much of it is now belongs to the state and national government, protecting the vulnerable environment from commercial exploitation.

I love finding examples of "nature's art" and am always taken with the patterns and colors that emerge. This certainly represents such a find.
