Solitude, Red Bluff Bay, Alaska, 2013

I made this image in the early calm of an Alaskan morning. The position of a lone kayak made this image work as an expression of solitude. It is placed at the exact spot where all of the slopes converge, yet it floats free from the any background interference. The red hull draws the eye, contrasting to the green trees and the blue-sky overhead.

Color is a an extremely important component of this image, Rose. The kayak offers a touch of red that focuses our attention on the scale comparison here. The diagonal flow of green light on the trees to its right echoes the huge diagonal cliff on the left, dominating image and creating a reason for the contrast in scale.
