Superstition Mountains, Gold Canyon, Arizona, 2013

By juxtaposing a forest of Saguaro Cactus against the mountain that fills the background of this image, I am able to create a repetitive flow of vertical lines that bind these works of nature together. The slender Saguaros point directly to the vertical markings that cover the face and crown of the mountain behind them.

Thanks, Bill and Anitta for coming to this image. It was a beautiful scene, and in such light it becomes ever more lovely. The challenge here was in expressing the idea, as you point out, Anitta. When we photograph vast areas of space, we must try to find the core of that idea, and somehow simplify it as much as possible. In this case, the Saguaro Cactus forest echoes millions of years of work by nature in creating the face of that mountain. The light brings out dimension, the frame limits distractions, and the post processing finish helps strengthen the juxtaposition as much as possible.

Thanks, Pete and Stephanie. The light is important here -- I made this image about two hours before sunset, so the sun is low enough to illuminate the Saguaro from the side to give them a sense of dimension.
