At the doorway, Havana, Cuba, 2012

While I was photographing the older man sitting on a tiny stool at the entrance to his home along his pair of dogs, the door opened, and another man came through it carrying a young child. Both men wear blue shirts with red sleeves, as well as trousers in varying shades of blue. The warm humid climate of Havana encourages an abundance of life on its streets and on its doorsteps. The worn paint on the door also tells its story – the home has been here a long time, and aesthetic improvements are a luxury few can afford.

I love your interpretation of this image as time-travel, Celia. So much of Cuba was exactly that. They do look they have been sitting here forever, and will continue to do so.

This is another doorway through the passage of time. The building and its door are obviously very old yet the people who emerge from it are dressed in modern casual attire. It's as if they have travelled through time. I like that there is a representation of different generations here as well-the old man sitting on the wooden box representing the past, the young man representing the now, and the young baby representing the future of Cuba. Well, the dogs? They are man's best friends-even in Cuba! A universal value!

Yes, each party does its thing here --separately. The doors and ceilings are high -- there is no air conditioning in these homes, and lofty spaces are important in Cuba's hot and humid climate. I like the expectant posture of the white dog as well. The child seems to be looking down at it. Thanks, Carol, for noting these details.

I can't help but notice how the five characters in this story seem to have separate agendas. I especially love the expression of the little white dog as he peers upward to the man as if asking permission to exit the building. I also notice how tall the doors are, so all the ceilings must be extremely high.
