Fallen Blossoms, Columbus Cemetery, Havana, Cuba, 2012

As we entered this vast city of the dead, I noticed the symbolism of the fallen purple and white blossoms underfoot. It was as if each one of them represented a burial in this place. In some cultures, purple is the color of associated with death. I searched for and found a spot where these flowers rested on two different kinds of stone and made this image. The blossoms seem to be making the passage here from life to death.

Fragility of life, indeed. That thought adds still another dimension to this image, Celia. Many thanks.

These fallen blossoms have begun to wilt in Cuba's heat and humidity. Speaks to me about the fragility of life.

Thank you, Carol. I first tried this shot with the blossoms upon a single surface background. It did not work for me in terms of the story I was trying tell. These blossoms were souls in transition to me, and I wanted my viewers to feel likewise. Only a background of differing textures and color would make that transition work.

The definite line between the two textures of the ground certainly illustrates your theory of the flowers' passage from life to death. Beautifully seen and captured.
