Flea Market, Jaffa, Israel, 2011

The essence of a flea market is variety – and this shop window offers a good example of it. The foreground is filled with kitchen goods, while the middle ground features a decorative elephant, a hat, and two clocks. The background painting of a Middle Eastern figure seated on a cushion and holding a hookah in his lap ties the image together and gives the scene a local flavor.

Thanks for pointing out the role of the elephant's trunk here, Tim. It does function as a directional arrow, indicating the hookah, while one of the hands on the clock points, in turn, to the head of the seated man. The image features many different subjects, but their placement within both the shop window itself, and within the frame of the camera, organizes what might have been a chaotic jumble into a coherent presentation. While I had no control over the placement of the objects in the window, I was able to recognize this coherence present within the scene, and I chose to make this photograph because of it.

I like that the elephant trunk seems to be like a snake point the eye up into the image.
