Portrait, by Kathy Khuner, Ranthambore, India, 2008

Kathy Khuner, a pbase photographer whose work can be seen at http://www.pbase.com/kjkhuner, made this portrait of me just before leaving for a game drive through India’s Ranthambore Tiger Reserve back in 2008. (She found this image in her files and sent it on to me in 2011. I am a little older and perhaps somewhat wiser, but the essentials are the same.) I wear this outback hat for shoots in the sun. It has a cord that I use to lash it to my head while riding in windy, uncovered vehicles. It also offers a ventilated crown, which I find ideal for keeping cool. I like this portrait because it finds me relatively relaxed and comfortable in my surroundings.

Thanks so much for those kind words, Steve. I agree with all you say about the way we learn. Some of my students, who had never contacted me since I worked with them, will suddenly decide to write or call and tell me how much an idea they may once have learned from me still resonates. I also agree that it takes a lot of time to come to appreciate the gifts that others may have given us, particular the gift of knowledge. Thanks again, Steve.

Phil, this photo calmly captures you and reminds me of something from my travels--the amazing fellow travelers who we meet along the way. Often, it is AFTER our travels that we appreciate how special a person really is. Likewise, much of what we learn from people comes after we are no longer with those people but when we have time to ponder and learn more about them. It is also a simple lesson to myself--don't judge people. The multifaceted nature of all people takes time to appreciate and as noted, usually occurs after you have gone separate ways. There's one and only one PHOTO PHIL......and I was so blessed to be with you in Alaska. I've also been blessed because of your passion to share and teach your craft!

Thanks, Iris -- I find that anticipation is a huge part of travel photography. We know what subjects we may encounter, but we can only imagine how our photographs will express that reality. So much depends on the light, the moment, and the vantage point. So we anticipate the best possible outcomes, and they often come true.
